Highly recommend! We learned so much about Nashville civil rights history. A highlight of our trip. Had a great walk around town seeing important local historical points about civil rights. Our guide was great!

Melissa Hall

Ready or not, your life is about to change. Once you open yourself to this opportunity, you will see many things through a new lens. It’s convicting, it’s compelling, it’s challenging, and it’s worth it. You will be privy to new perspectives and new friends

Jernie Millan

I will not sugar coat this. You will experience extreme highs and lows. You will share some of your most vulnerable experiences – but this is where the growth happens. You will grow so much in 7-days. You can do this. Lean into the unknown. BIPOC need you.

Lisa McCarthy

Chakita provided a moving experience that offered a new perspective on Nashville. We booked the Civil rights tour and the Black history tour back-to-back and I’m glad we did. Great stories and research.

“My husband and I took several Nashville walking tours this summer during our vacation. The civil rights tour was truly the best one. Chakita and Ogden are exceptional storytellers. You feel like you are there, watching the students of the civil rights movement march down 5th Avenue, walk into the department store, and courageously sit-in demanding equality for all.”

-April Galia

Amy Jackson

I am so impressed by Chakita. She has taken time to create a safe space for other races to learn about what it means to be Black in America. I have learned so much from her group and her honesty. She pushes us to honestly look at ourselves and see our impact. Thank you for allowing us to learn from you. I am forever grateful to you!

Donna Zeigfinger

This was eye opening. I learned how to change the way I see others and I talk to others. This will be a life-long journey and one I have to remind myself of. The cost is minimal but worth the lifelong education

Rosemarie Japson

The tour was excellent and very thought-provoking. This experience was worth 5-stars, 6-stars even. Everyone should experience the Slavery to Freedom Walking Tour to learn about slavery in Nashville.

Jes Midgett

Really interesting tour. Chakita is very knowledgeable and engaging and we learned quite a few things we hadn’t known before. I plan to go back for another tour next time I visit Nashville.

Awesome tour with a very unique perspective on the music city.

Janear

We did not what to expect and we’re blown away by the content, delivery and amount of knowledge our guide had. Worth every penny and more. Chikita – the founder – is just amazing. Thank you so much!!

Keith B

The experience was educational and enlightening. We used some of the content to further examine historical sights in and around Nashville. We would recommend the tour guide have identifiable clothing with logo of tour guide company. Guide was engaging and friendly.

JB Traveler

Awesome tour! We were lucky to meet two guides, both energetic, cheerful, knowledgeable, and informative. We learned motivators and impacts of key events, heard memorable stories, saw important locations, and gained insight into several of historically black colleges and universities. We highly recommend the tour.

Christina D

Chakita was so engaging and awesome to hear provide this tour!! She was authentic and very knowledgeable. I brought a group of high school students and they all were listening to every word. Would love to do a different tour with her!

I couldn’t be more pleased by the honor and passion in which Chiquita shared Nashville’s Black History. The tour left us inspired to continue celebrating, honoring & sharing the stories of those who paved the way for us today. If nothing else you leave the tour championing to educate yourself on the perspectives that are being silenced in our world.

I had a amazing time and learned a lot! They were very knowledgeable about the history! Wear comfortable clothes and good walking shoes! I felt safe at every location we stopped at. We went over the time allotted and they were very patient. ( thank you a million) Very entertaining and not your average tour! The only suggestion I would have to give is to try to make the ending place where the tour began. Although we weren’t that far from the starting point, we were able to find our way back easily and enjoyed some amazing soul food when the tour was over. (Disclaimer: the food was not apart of the tour, we ate afterwards on our own and the guides DID ask if we knew how to get back)

Denzel Y

Highly recommend street tour. Learned a lot about Jefferson Street. My guy with the afro was well informed.

Peggy A

What a great tour. I was entertaining a friend from Portland, OR and we left so informed and enthralled in the tour we didn’t want it to end. I will definitely bring my husband and children back for the longer, more extensive version. Thank you United Street Tours!

Amber S

First, the information on the tour was perfect (what everyone should expect from a walking tour). However, our tour guide was amazing. Her gift of story telling, ability to make the historic events personal AND keep us warm and moving among the snow flurries was incredible. Chiquita’s passion kept us all warm and laughing!

Incredible Knowledgeable tour!! I was so impressed with the history of our heritage. I highly recommend doing this tour.

-Sterling J

This was a great tour and I enjoyed learning how women were instrumental to the Civil Rights movement for more than keeping house. Ogden is very soft spoken, so as a listener it forces you to pay attention to not only your surroundings but the dialog being shared. Thank you so much – we will be back for more of the other tours.

Ava

My partner and I had a great time on the Nashville Black History Walking Tour with Ogden! I am a lover of history and work in the history field, so whenever I go to a new city I try to check out a historical walking tour. I was very disappointed in some other historic sites we saw that seemed to totally erase black lives and black history. This tour did a great job of telling stories that are so often pushed aside. I was very impressed that the Civil Rights portion of the tour didn’t focus on the names we all know, but instead on women who I hadn’t heard of. I loved learning about Diane Nash and all that she did. I also enjoyed how Ogden talked about not just the faces of the movement – but those who supported them. Overall a very interesting time!

Paula Kristin Co

What a great tour! I had an amazing experience in exploring the city while being told about how things were before. Chakita is very good at sharing different stories about the city’s past compared to how it is now. I would absolutely recommend this tour, especially to students. Why? Because the tour helps the preservation of history for future generations. I want to give props to United Street Tours. Their team is very enthusiastic and very amusing. They made the experience so much better. This is definitely one for the books!

Eurie Shanine B

At first, I thought this tour would be just like those ordinary tours. It exceeded all of my expectations. United Street Tours really did a great job! They made sure that we are having fun while touring. It was an exceptional experience for me and my friends. I’ve learned a lot and at the same time I got to see the beautiful city of Nashville. I loved how approachable our tour guide is. I also loved how full of resources she was and I was fancied by those facts that she told us. It is a must recommended tour for people who wanted to see the city and its history. I am amazed by this tour. I will definitely book another tour from United Street Tours!

My husband and I had an awesome time together. We will never forget how much fun we had from this tour. The tour is definitely outstanding and I wish we could’ve extended the duration of the tour. A bubbly tour guide helped us discover what life is like for locals in the Music City. The staff was very punctual, informative and organized. They were on-point and they were able to cover everything. We then had good food especially the sweet southern tea and traditional Nashville delicacies. You guys were amazing. ‘Til our next trip!

This tour is an eye-opener to historical events. I highly recommend this especially to those who are planning to visit Nashville to personally see and experience the culture of black people. It’s a very interesting experience that will change people’s perspective – like how we should appreciate black people and see their importance in this generation. This is also a must for all students who are keen on knowing more about the city’s history. Nashville is such a wonderful place. I can confidently say that it’s one of the most beautiful tourist destinations I’ve ever been to in my life. Knowing the facts and events of this place makes it more beautiful than ever. The most exciting part was when we were in the Music Heritage of Nashville. As a music lover, it is with great joy to finally see the well-known Music City, Nashville. I want to take another tour with them with the hopes of bringing my loved ones to see the beauty of Nashville.

Aubrey Ian

The tour was exceptional. United Street Tours did everything to make sure that the overall experience would be smooth and awesome. It was very informative and we definitely enjoyed every moment of it. This is one of the best tours I’ve ever booked. More so, we were able to learn more about Nashville’s civil rights movement and the result of it as well. Aside from being so educational, this tour is definitely entertaining. This tour deserves a date in your calendar of events for this year. This is a must!

Dominic H

This tour bridged food with music history which is a great combination! United Street Tours introduced us to famous and little-known historical places in the Nashville community on our 2-hour walking tour.

The tour was customized for us which gave us the feeling that we were experiencing an authentic part of the United States. Our tour guide was Ogden. He was full of information about Nashville’s history and things to do in the city for fun.

All of the staff who assisted us were friendly and that made the whole experience great. Exceptional customer service throughout the process. United Street Tours is my favorite tour company in Nashville. I would recommend taking several tours with them. The next time, I’m in Nashville, I’m bringing my whole family to experience their tours.

Cristy

As a chef, I’ve always wanted to go to Nashville. A friend told me about United Street Tours and that they host great tours in Nashville as well. So I booked this experience to try to hit two birds with one stone and it was one of the best decisions I made. I learned so much about Nashville’s history while eating delicious delicacies. I also learned about the city’s traditional cuisine. The guide and my fellow foodies were friendly, too. My stomach and my heart were full after the meet and eat. I will recommend this to my officemates. God bless you and your team. Two thumbs up!

Great way to experience and learn about a part of Nashville that would otherwise not be available. Our guide did an amazing job and we are inspired to learn more. This was the highlight of our visit in Nashville.

We had a blast today learning about different Nashville women who made great strides in the civil rights movement. Chakita was soo entertaining even my 3 y/o (7 and under free) had a blast. Chakita did not miss a beat when my Murphy used her as a resting post in front of Woolworth. ( A historic site important to the Civil rights movement where sit ins happened. We were immersed in the history and it gave me goosebumps. Chakita is a hero. She is making sure that the unknown is known and brought to light. Thank you for expanding my mental horizons and fueling my fire to learn and be more active.

Some pictures it may look like we are not paying attention but I was just keeping an eye on Murphy. What you don’t see is Chakita adjusting her body position or volume to make sure we were included in the tour. We were lucky to have an intimate group with it being a Monday morning and it allowed us more questions and a more personalized tour. I can’t wait to do my next one.

Nisha A

Very informative tour! Learned a lot of new things about music, pioneers, and the HBCU’s surrounding the Jefferson street area! Chikita was very friendly and enthusiastic!

MarTaze G

I had an amazing tour with founder, Chakita. She was extremely knowledgeable of the history, including things she’s learned from personal relationships with some of the people whose experiences she mentions on the tour. I felt like we could have walked and talked for hours. I will definitely be recommending friends to this business.

Anna H

Very informative, Nashville history that doesn’t always get covered, and yet it’s right under our noses. Highly recommend!

Very informative and Chakita is an excellent story teller. I would highly recommend this tour and any other she offers

-Smalone05

Pegkingsbury

This was a fantastic tour. The walk is easy and Chakita tells delightful, informative stories along the way. She truly makes Jefferson Street come alive and the energy of the area from years past was felt. We loved everything about it.

TravelingAtHome

This is an amazing tour. The tour guide was fun, engaging, and knowledgeable. I highly suggest everyone— Nashvillians, newbies, and tourists alike — take this tour!!

Brooke A

I strongly recommend any of the United Street Tours for Nashvillians and guests. I think that I have taken all but one. I love the “beta” tours on women in the civil rights movement.

Emilee W.

I did the 1 hour tour, but if it wasn’t so cold would have gone longer. It was a great, small group. Chakita’s personality makes it a really fun positive experience for everyone.

I’m a Nashville local, born and raised, and had an amazing time on this tour. I learned so much about my own city and its history that I never knew. Chakita is so knowledgeable and has clearly done her homework in terms of research and interviewing those who lived through the stories she tells. She does an incredible job sharing both the beautiful and triumphant as well as the heart-breaking in Nashville’s history, calling out injustices that happened while giving grace to those in the stories at the same time.

She has a heart of gold and is a fantastic communicator. She also shares general messages of empowerment throughout the tour, referencing her own story, that make you walk away from the tour wanting to pursue the purposes for your own life without fear, and with belief that change can happen as a result.

One of my favorite things about this tour is the questions she poses as you visit familiar downtown landmarks, that make you think about multiple sides of the story and the repercussions, not just the side typically celebrated and talked about.

Lastly, I love that this tour ends with sharing a meal as a group. It gives more time to talk through things learned, questions still had, and just to enjoy Chakita and the rest of the tour group’s company. Well worth your time and money.

-RACHEL

Chrissy W

Chakita was excellent full of information, fun, stories, inspiration. I plan to take every tour she offers.

Gwendolync

This tour was exceptional! Our guide, Chakita Patterson, was up-beat, energetic, and knowledgeable. She talked about little-known facts and expounded on others, while revealing the controversies that accompanied them. Being a native Nashvillian, I was interested to know what would/could be revealed to me; I was not disappointed. While this is my first time touring with United Street Tours, I would highly recommend this tour, and frankly any of the others being offered by this company.

HairTyLLC

We thoroughly enjoyed this tour. It was very cold outside, yet worth it. Would definitely go on another one!

Lyn H

A must experience for any history buff looking to learn about stories that are many times left out of the history books and off plaques. We need more diverse stories to get the complete picture of our nation’s history. This is cutting edge inclusion work and fun!!

I had such a Fabulous time walking and learning about the roles women in Nashville played in the Civil Right Movement. I will be going on more tours.

-Tremeta J

Lynn S

Chakita and her team are clearly very passionate and knowledgable about the area and black history. I loved seeing historical sites in a new light on this tour. Since we live near downtown, I’ll be taking my friends and family on new tours when they come to visit. I’d highly recommend this tour if you’d like to see more than a white-washed history of Nashville.

Suewill

I have lived here for more than twenty years and learned so much in this one hour tour. The guides are knowledgeable, interactive, and passionate about our history.

Brooke

Loved this tour! Chakita brings so much energy & passion to her work in sharing the secret her-story of the Civil Rights actions in Nashville. It was super powerful to hear these stories while standing on the very sidewalks & in buildings where the brave men & women of the movement risked their lives to change the world. Highly recommend!

Aye N

This tour was great. I fully enjoyed the experience – even in the rain. I learned a lot about Nashville history and wanted to hear more. The tour guides were very engaging and passionate. I hope to check out a few of the other tours as well. I was grateful for the opportunity to meet other people I wouldn’t normally have interacted with.

The tour was well designed, cleverly delivered, and packed with information that taught this Nashville professor new things. I highly recommend it and will be bringing all guests on one tour or another until I have sampled them all!

-Brooke A

Casey F

This tour was incredible and Chakita is so knowledgable and her energy is infectious. I not only left with more knowledge about the civil rights movement in Nashville, but I left inspired as well. This is great if you are a local or if you are just visiting.

I find the Capturing Urban Street Art Photo Tour very interesting and very eye pleasing. Street Art is well designed and is very enjoyable. Nashville Walking Tour package is worth it and is highly recommended to everyone who wants to tour around Nashville. Indeed, a great 5 star experience!

I enjoyed the 1-Hour Local Food and History Experience. I tasted their delicacies and know more of its history as well. I got to meet local diners and the best experience I ever had. I would always come back here with my children and would recommend it to my friends.

Music has a kind of pleasure which human beings could hardly resist. I have been to many concerts of my favorite singers and performers and I have also seen a lot of artists sing songs that touched my heart and soul, I have also heard much beautiful music but never have I experienced something as worthy and heart-whelming as this one- Tours and Soul Hidden Music History Tour. I felt good as someone who was born and raised in Tennessee to know the history of a city which never stops singing, Nashville. I really enjoyed the informative and entertaining stories of the tour guide and I felt the interest in me to support the preservation of this rich music history in Nashville so that the future generation will be able to hear this wonderful history.

Kris M.

What an awesome experience going to NASHVILLE. Tried the 1-Hour Local Food and History Experience package and got to experience tasting some of the most delicious delicacies offered with the package while eating with my tour guide and other local diners. I love the food, the local diners were one of the most friendliest people I’ve ever met. The package is so affordable! One of the most memorable experience. I wouldn’t think twice going back again.

Decee Jean

The tour guide is very clever and it made me really understand the history. It’s a pretty awesome experience and I would always come back here and would recommend it to my friends.

Thanks Nashville guides for helping us find a good place to eat with delicious foods where we felt so comfortable and has a very nice environment. Foods were so delicious and worth the price, and everyone must try it.

-Michelle A

Dan

The 1 hour that we spent on this tour is definitely worth it. The tour guide is very informative and accommodating. It’s absolutely recommended and I would definitely try it again with other companions.

Chris W

The tour was awesome. I’ve lived here my entire life and still learned so much. Add this and all tours by United Street Tours to your bucket list of must dos.

Kati A

I really recommend! The Black History Walking Tour of Nashville was very fun and interesting. The tour guide Ogden is very charismatic. We discussed how Nashville was a pro-slavery city with a thriving slave trade. In addition, the government of Nashville used to own 26 slaves. This tour was eye-opening and showed us a different side of Nashville.

Usama K

“Kudos to the 1-Hour Local Food and History Experience. Excellent tour with great historical perspective

My organization scheduled a private night tour with United Street Tours and loved every minute. Our tour guide, Chakita, was superb. She made the tour really interesting and she was very knowledgeable. A must-do tour. We highly recommend it. Our guide was full of resources. When asked, she recommended we read Bobby Lovett’s book “The African-American History of Nashville, Tennessee.

-Claudio Anthoni

Lhoralive P

Out of all of the Nashville Tours, The Civil Rights Walking Tour of Nashville came highly recommended so I decided to book. Our guide shared stories that are both historic and inspiring. It was very fun and informative. I can’t wait to take some of the other tours listed. My favorite stop was visiting the Nashville Civil Rights Museum that is made up of a room full of interactive exhibits. While there we sat around the symbolic lunch counter and learned about the Ten Rules of Conduct that the protesters followed during the sit-ins.

Mykz P

The Civil Rights Tour offers sharp insights into Nashville politics and the social climate of that period. I thought I had a strong understanding of the civil rights movement but quickly realized there was so much more to know. Learning about the origins, leaders, strategy, and tactics with our guides Chakita and Ogden was an incredible experience.

Angel

Our tour was led by Lauren, a Nashville native. She provided an amazing experience that explains much about the key players in the lunch counter sit-ins. In Nashville during the1960s a lot of the leaders in the black community were afraid of moving too fast towards integration. But the students knew that they had to move hastily and intentionally towards change. This tour was awe-inspiring. I’m so glad my children got to experience it.

Bilal K

We took the Nashville Black History Walking Tour. It’s full of great insights. It’s also remarkable put together

The Slavery to Freedom Walking Tour boldly embodies what it means to live in an equitable-free society without love, empathy, or compassion. And a roadmap on how to challenge that. February 1960, marked a time when a bold group of students from the city’s four black colleges, American Baptist, Fisk University, Meharry Medical College, and Tennessee State University, confront racism at lunch counters, movie theaters, and other places in Nashville and beyond.

-Kate J

Harriet A

Excellent job done in getting a feel for the people of the time. Well conducted. Good research done.

Michele A Brown

Chaquita Patterson started United Street Tours as a way to help us all understand the history of the Civil Rights movement, the role that music, businesses, families, individuals, and the community had then and now. Chaquita was engaging for our group of 30 people making us laugh, think, and honor a city with rich tradition that is not going to be found in your average convention and visitor’s bureau tour. The stories and insight Chaquita provided were stellar and made this tour enjoyable and educational. You are not seeing Nashville if you are not spending time on this tour.

Sim

The Civil Rights Movement Tour is a lively, engaging, and moving experience that offers a fresh perspective on Nashville’s past and present.

Jessica Stein

All of United Street Tours contain information above and beyond most city tours. We used the Civil Rights Tour as part of our school’s professional development for teachers, including many native Nashvillians. We all learned things we had never known about our city’s history and the people who impacted its development. Chakita was also amazing at linking historical information to present day action. UST provides a critical service for Nashville!

We really enjoyed our tour. Our guide was passionate and energetic. She made the experience very enjoyable as well as informative. It opened our eyes to the events surrounding the civil rights movement in Nashville.

-Christina S

Justin Miller

Excellent tour!! This was a very informative and educational experience. I’m so glad I was able to go on this tour as it really shaped my understanding of the black experience. We discussed race relations in Nashville in the past and present through a historical context. Our guide welcomed questions and told us stories about early black life and some history about Native Americans as well. I love that she allowed time for independent exploration. I highly recommend this tour for anyone looking for an authentic experience.

Angel

Worth every minute! This tour provided a deep understanding of Nashville African American culture and history. I learned about American history and how the economy is connected to slavery. It gave us a chance to see the real Nashville others won’t show you. Out of all of the tours we took this is the best one. 5-star rating hands down.

Laurie C.

The African American Culture and Civil Rights Tours are fantastic–I booked them both back-to-back and enjoyed them immensely!
The history, of course, is important and fascinating, but the tours are great largely due to the guide, Chakita, and her engaging, knowledgable and kind manner. I loved her storytelling! She shared how vital it is to know those involved in the civil rights movement alongside the more famous Martin Luther King Jr. and Rosa Parks. The stories she told of individuals, like Paul LaPrad and Diane Nash, were especially moving. What incredible, courageous people–I want to learn more!
I left the tours, not only more educated, but feeling hopeful and inspired. I highly recommend both tours and I can’t say enough about Chakita!

Rodney T

My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our tour.  Chakita was friendly and personable and was able to explain the largely untold story of the contributions that African Americans have made in Nashville.  I would recommend this tour to anyone who would like to know more about African American history in Nashville!!

Our guide was full of amazing stories about black history and the black community in Nashville. We left the tour inspired to become change agents in our community. Very encouraging tour and excellent storytelling! The tour lasted an appropriate amount of time while introducing us to lesser known black history leaders like Black Bob and the Mckissack brothers. Our tour guide was flexible and friendly. Due to the cold winter weather, we ended our tour in a historic restaurant called Woolworth on 5th. At Woolworth, we learned about Paul LaPrad, a white college student who participated in the civil rights movement and took a behind-the-scenes tour of where the sit-ins actually happened. I would highly recommend this tour to everyone visiting Nashville and anyone seeking a diverse perspective.

-Shenna S

Zoeylili

The Civil Rights Movement Tour was remarkable! This is the best experience in Nashville. Nashville has a lot to offer in terms of country music and entertainment but it was a great opportunity to tap into the city’s diversity by taking this tour. We talked about key civil rights leaders in Nashville such as Congressman John Lewis and the role that black, as well as white people, played. It was a life-changing experience.

J T

The tour was a great introduction to the geography and places of Nashville downtown.
Chaquita knew where to go and what to see and, most importantly, what to emphasize
in the history of African-Americans in Nashville and Tennessee. Hearing her and seeing the monuments gave the context not provided at the monuments . It was a proper introduction and prequel to the Tennessee State museum.

BobSchafbuch

The tour guide was well informed, articulate, and helpful in providing insight into the local history relative to Civil Rights events. She was patient with my questions and very friendly.

I was most impressed with her commitment to complete the tour. I was the only one that paid, on a rainy day. She showed up and gave the tour on time and with a smile.

My experience with these tours can be less reliable. She was reliable with my tour.

Elizabeth Y

I’m a local, and I’m so glad I did this tour. There’s so much African American history that I’d never learned. Plus, Chakita was a wonderful guide and our group was so friendly! I would highly recommend this to anyone – local or tourist – looking to learn more about Nashville.

This was our first time visiting Nashville in a few years. This tour offered a unique experience. You are given an up-close look at several historic sites along with informative, lively commentary. Our guide was able to answer questions that arose as well as knowledgeably share in related discussions. Since the tour is downtown, we were able to continue our own site-seeing after it’s end. We learned key information about Nashville’s history and were able to step outside-the-box of our common travel activities.

-Shauna F

Erika F

This tour was very informative. My daughter and I loved it. We learned so much about the history here. The tour guide was great as well.

This was one of my favorite things I did in Nashville. I learned so much through Chakita’s gift for storytelling and dedicated research. Make time for this tour. You’ll be glad you did.

Informative and inspirational tour of the city from the perspective of African Americans and their experience and background in Nashville. Loved the energy and knowledge of the tour guides and the fact that they used the stories to encourage participants.

I really learned so much on this tour, things I already knew but didn’t know in details i can say chakita and Ogden are the best tour guides I’ve ever had. My 6 year old nephew talk about this tour so that it really impressed me to know that even a 6 year old didn’t miss a beat learning about our African Americans history every school, family, churches, outer towner, in towners she take this wonderful tour. Thanks chakita and Ogden

Katrinia S

The tour was awesome and very informative. When you come to Nashville please checkout United Steet Tours for a historical view of the city.

This tour was informative, engaging, personal, and urgent. We learned so much about life for African Americans and indigenous people in Nashville. I’d passed the sites visited hundreds of times, but now see the city in a whole new light! Chakita and Ogden bring so much life to the stories and history of the city.

-Greg O

Ellen Sauer

We are so grateful to have had the opportunity to learn from both Chakita and Ogden. They were a delightful and powerful tag team of wisdom and true history. We did a full day tour with them tailored to us so the time spent in advance of our tour chatting with us and planning was so valuable too. We strongly recommend booking with them and learning true history of Nashville and the civil rights movement.

LaLaLa

Our family took the African-American history tour and enjoyed every minute. Chakita is such a knowledgeable and engaging tour guide who challenged us to look for the voices and stories that are missing from the historical narratives we’ve always been told. This tour was a great way to see Nashville and learn about the people who helped shape our city but may not show up in history books. I didn’t want it to end and can’t wait to sign up for one of her other tours now!

Jodi VT

Our time with Chakita was one of the highlights of our trip to the South. As a former teacher, she is a compelling and engaging tour guide. Her knowledge of history is amazing, and it’s so refreshing to learn about ALL of the history of Nashville. I highly recommend her tour!

CNM

Chakita was such a joy and pleasure to have guide us throughout this tour. She was incredibly knowledgeable and her storytelling captured us all! This served as a great team building event for our organization and we walked away with an experience that will forever connect us. We are so appreciative of Chakita and United Street Tours for bringing African American History in Nashville to life.

Chakita is passionate, engaging, funny, a great storyteller, and a treasure trove of knowledge. I learned so much on this tour. Chakita has big dreams with United Street Tours, so don’t hesitate to sign up! You won’t be disappointed.

Chiquita and Ogden love what they do and know their stuff. Most of all, she is an impressive storyteller. Her passion, humor and knowledge really made us feel connected to the ideas and feelings central to Nashville’s African American History. So glad we did this!

AdventureEveryday

I’m appreciative of Chakita and her African American History tour! I learned so much about the journey of AfAm in Nashville from the time the first settlers came to the area through the civil rights movement. Thank you so much for being so personable and bringing such an infectious energy to the tour!! I really enjoyed myself.

Shekinah

The Black History Tour was awesome. Our guide Chekita did a great job and was very knowledgeable and personable. I have lived in Nashville for over 20 years and learned some new facts during the tour.

Kar

We took the Black History walking tour and it was incredible. We were given an experience we would have never had if it weren’t for Chakita. Her history telling was captivating and insightful. Definitely recommend if you want to learn more about Nashville and it’s rich culture and history.

This was such a great experience. To walk through such historic university grounds and surrounding streets, and learn from such passionate young people was wonderful! It was a great idea to start at dusk and so enjoyable to finish the evening with most of us eating a delicious meal together at a restaurant that was along the way. I would recommend this tour to anybody who wants to find out more about the rich history of this area.

Our group really enjoyed the tour. The leaders of the tour were very knowledgeable and kept our interest the entire tour. If you’re looking for a tour in Nashville that touches on a lot of history and especially the Africa America experience, United Street Tours is the company to book.

Stacie M

The tour provided an abundance of information about Jefferson Street, it’s history, and the community. I would highly suggest this tour to anyone looking to gain a deeper understanding of the area!! This is the 2nd tour I’ve done with United Street Tours and I look forward to participating in any future tours offered.

Jae

Excellent tour! Been living here for a few years n never knew the history if the places I go to or pass by all the time. Nice n informative tour guides. My favorite stop was the recording studio. Preciate y’all for everything.

Ashley B

The owners were great working with Outdoor Afro to provide an interesting tour centered on the rich African American history on Jefferson St. We loves it!

My husband and I recently traveled to Nashville and wanted to learn more about the history of the city as pertains to my African American heritage. I knew the city had a rich civil rights history and I figured that as a first time visitor there was even more to discover than I wouldn’t be able to figure out myself. We therefore had the pleasure of being guided around the city by Chakita and Ogden. These two are warm, engaging and great story tellers. It is clear that they are passionate about history and have read many primary source documents in order to provide a substantive tour. They told the story of the city through the use of different historical figures during slavery, Jim Crow, and the Civil Rights movement. They were careful to point out certain landmarks that are easy to miss if your aren’t explicity looking for them. I am very glad that I spent the time with them and look forward to visiting with the city and with United Street Tours again!

Thank you to Ogden and Chakita, founders of @UnitedStreetTours, for leading us through the rich and often untold stories of African Americans in downtown Nashville. We biked along the greenway to our first stop, Fort Nashboro, and began with the first African Americans who settled in the Nashville area. Next we learned about the entrepreneurial quasi-slaves living in the city, not on the plantations, as well as the rich contributions to the civil rights movement that occured in Nashville thanks to student-led efforts at Fisk University, TSU, and fierce community members. We ended our tour at the historical Woolworths. This was a very informative tour and everyone in our group was very happy they attended.

Ambassador

Great Tour ! I encourage everyone to discover this African American Journey with them! Very Knowledgeable Tour Guides

Brittney T

Hands down the best experience in Nashville.  The tour encompassed historical sights and areas of Nashville that would have taken us all day to find on our own. The guides Chakita and Ogden shared many historical nuggets about the places, people, and culture of Nashville and American history. They were relaxed, friendly and very informative. I highly recommend this tour for everyone!

My boyfriend and I booked a tour with United Street Tours and I must say we are extremely happy we did. We absolutely loved it!!!! We both learn things we never knew about Nashville. This was the best experience I’ve had and we will definitely do another tour with United Streets soon!!!!!!!

My husband and I decided to take a small road trip after Christmas and we visited the fest. It was very kid friendly and we enjoyed the music, the art and the culture of the event. Very educational as well!! We will definitely be visiting again!

Kaytura

it was a sweet experience…very sweet and informative.

Jennifer

Queen is a teacher in the form of a tour guide 🙂 Her passion & storytelling of Black History in Nashville is not only appreciated, but needed. Thank you Queen, I will start asking myself what might be missing vs what am I seeing. Highly recommend this tour!

Ericka

Great tour, I learned a ton about black history. Would recommend this tour for sure.

Lisa

Good and open perspective of one of the founding people of Nashville. Good start for the taste of the cultural and important history that Black people have provided to Tennessee. Thank you Queenie. Lisa and Dylan from Ca

Our guide Lauren was very nice and knowledgeable. I thoroughly enjoyed the tour with her. Only thing I wish was there were more stops and the meeting location was hard to find.

-Amanda

Khadija

This is an absolute must for anyone who is visiting Nashville. Not only was the tour guide super informative but also clearly was passionate about what they were doing. They shared personal stories that related to the tour and engaged me in conversations about what the tour was about. I didn’t think much about the Black culture of Nashville until this tour and I’m glad I was able to learn about the rich Black culture that Nashville has. If you are into history, Nashville, Black culture or any of the above, this is a must!

Odette

Great tour from a unique multicultural perspective. I would definitely recommend this tour for a more in-depth view of Nashville’s history.

Melody

Great guide, funny , nice and knowledgeable but his historical facts were in some instances shaky . He needs to really get his dates and some facts down so as to look more professional. Overall a good experience

Chelsea

One of the best things I’ve done on a trip was sign us up for the African American History tour, by @unitedstreettours. Chiquita is knowledgeable and warm and open and gave us not only a Nashville history lesson, but also suggestions on how to address racist comments or overtones. She was wonderful! Strongly recommend.

Queen is a real people person who can make anyone care about history. I would recommend Queen’s tour to everyone who wants to know Nashville. I just wanted more!

-Maria

Ayo

Queen has great vibe! She’s passionate about telling the stories of those who have been marginalized throughout history and that’s a refreshing perspective to encounter.

Jennifer

What a spectacular experience that provided a counterbalance to what is the typical Nashville tourist trap. It was freezing cold outside, but Queen’s warmth made it worth it.

A. Jesse Jiryu

Informative, concise tour of civil rights spots in downtown Nashville. Queen is so engaging that even though it was nasty weather today I enjoyed every minute.

Frances

Queen was a delightful tour guide, well-informed and passionate about the sights she pointed out to us. We enjoyed the tour immensely!

That was a very good tour. Queen knows history very well and she’s very good at relaying information so I really enjoyed the tour and learned quite a few things. One quick note regarding parking- this is downtown Nashville, there are many metered parking spots on Gay and Church streets but they only accept QUARTERS so brings TONS of quarters (cost is 8 quarters per hour) and nobody in Nashville has quarters!

-Fares

Susan

We enjoyed this walking tour of downtown Nashville and appreciated the detailed knowledge and animated delivery of our tour guide.

YuWei

It is a good tour and you can learn a lot during the tour.

Grace

Oh my gosh! Queen (or Chiquita as she will delightfully share) was an absolute joy. I got really lucky and was the only one on the tour and it felt just like hanging out with a fun and very knowledgeable friend! She has so much history to teach and stories to share and I came away from the experience with a perspective that I definitely would not have ever had if not for her. I’d have taken an all day tour with her if I could! I highly highly recommend this tour, I cannot praise her enough. And definitely eat at Woolworth like she suggests – I took my friend there after the tour and it was everything I wanted in Southern food!

Jenny

Queen’s knowledge of the local history was so informative and powerful. I learnt such important information today which I can’t wait to share with others that I never knew about before thankyou so much Queen. ❤ Well worth your time while in Nashville.

Fascinating and mind opening tour. Queen was a knowledgable, friendly and not overly formal guide and took us around key areas in Nashville’s African American history. I would recommend this tour to anyone.

-Andrew

Alexis

This tour is a must if you’re looking for a unique experience that is powerful and educational. Queen was great! So knowledgeable and she took us around to interesting sites that I would have missed otherwise.

Jackie

We loved the tour! Our guide was delightful. Very energetic, knowledgeable and provided many insights and a new perspective on Nashville’s true African American history. We highly recommend this tour!

Andrea

This tour is amazing. If you want to see hidden gems, understand the untold history of Nashville from slavery to African American achievements to the heart of the Civil Rights movement, this is it. Our guide was friendly, informative and humorous. We learned so much, and were able to ask all those questions that you might be afraid to ask but really wanted to know. The highlight was our visit to the local library and seeing my ancestors portraits on the wall! I would never have found them if it hadn’t been for Queen. I can’t thank her enough.

Jodi

We had an exceptional experience with Queen! Our eyes were opened to a piece of Nashville history that is often, sadly, silenced. She’s a vibrant guide who knew so many details about African American history. I highly recommend this tour!

Guides were great, knowledgeable tour guides. Their passion was so powerful and resounding. This was arguably one of the best informative, local tours from an AA perspective. Definitely recommend to all.

-Katie

Brandi

I thought it was a wonderful tour and we learned so much about history that we didn’t know before. I would recommend this tour when you visit Nashville.

Samantha

This was an educational and humbling experience about African American history. This should be on the top of the list of things to do whilst in Nashville. Queen is well researched and knowledgeable. She has the ability to present the material in clear narrative way. Queen posed lots of reflective questions that I’m still thinking about. Thank you!

Christen

It was a rainy day and I was lucky to get a private tour with Chiquita. She certainly knows her subject (met some of the actors of the Nashville civil rights movement in person), took me to places that carry history and told me stories I had no idea about. Highly recommended!

Fadima

This tour is awesome! It was my first time in Nashville and I wanted to see more than the touristy country music scene. Learning about the role Nashville played in the civil rights movement was very eye opening and a great way end to my trip. We were hit with rain but we didn’t let that stop us. Queen still gave me the full tour experience and we had a great time.

An excellent way to connect with the civil rights history of the city. Chiquita was very inviting and passionate about bringing the role Nashville played in the Civil Rights movement to light.

-Quinn

Shannon

The Civil Rights movement tour was enlightening and interesting. Lauren was very knowledgeable. Really enjoyed it.

Keith

Amazing. I loved Queen’s energy and enthusiasm. I would recommend it. 🙂 thanks.

Timothy

The tour is a must for anyone interested in history. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting or anyone living in the area. You will not be disappointed.

Lisa

This is an amazing tour and Chikita is a wonderful storyteller that allows an in-depth unique insight into the 1950-60’s civil rights movement in Nashville. I was astounded at the depth of organization, training, and structure that went into the sit-ins. I am going away with a wish to learn so much more about this very prominent time in history. I am so happy she is teaching the next generation, because this is a part of history that is really only touched upon (if at all) and who knew that each town approached integration differently. Thanks so much Chikita.

We really enjoyed our time with Queen. We learned a lot about Nashville’s civil rights history that we didn’t know

-Jacqueline

Herb

The trip was fun and informative. An excellent excursion for anyone visiting Nashville!

Donna

It was just ok. There are long periods of walking with little to no engagement from the guide. Much of what was presented in the vast ocean of avail information was presented at a millimeters depth. If I could do it over again, I wouldn’t.

Virginia

Chiquita was great. She was engaging and articulate and we had a free flowing conversation as well as learning so much from her about the very important events that occurred in Nashville that were pivotal to the Civil Rights Movement and visiting the places where they occurred. It was a very special few hours.

Kate

What a unique and powerful tour. The other tours do not go in depth with the African American experience in Nashville. This one does!

I HIGHLY recommend booking this tour with Queen. A welcomed break from Broadway! Queen was engaging, knowledgeable and inspiring. The whole group agreed that it was packed with great information and we all learned a lot about the lesser known (but very important) history of Nashville. Invest in this tour, you won’t regret it!

-Molly

Ashley

A great introduction to the Civil Rights Movement in Nashville, with in-depth visits to key sites by a highly-knowledgeable and passionate guide. Queen’s delivery of her in-depth knowledge of the material was engaging and well-paced. I would recommend for anyone who wants to experience Nashville beyond cowboy hats and honky-tonk.

Laura

This tour was unique and informative. My partner has a short attention span, but she actively listened to everything Queen said on this tour. This was our first time in Nashville and I am glad we booked this tour. I feel like every city in the South should have a tour like this one.

Jessica

Ogden was a great guide, he was very knowledgeable and showed us some cool places. He was easy to talk to.

Raun

If you want a thought provoking tour of the multiple perspectives of Nashville history this is the tour for you. If you have time take the 2 hour tour. The information I learned and the questions that Queen challenged us with informed the remainder of my trip and will remain with me long after as I view historical experiences/information.

Great tour! Loved learning about a new area of Nashville. Ogden was great.

-Jill

Nicole

Walking Jefferson Street with Queen was equal parts enriching and heartbreaking. Don’t miss it if you want a cultural experience outside of the heavily gentrified Downtown Nashville nucleus.

Becky

Amazing tour!

Sara

Meshach is an amazing human. He is an historian and an activist. He brought Civil Rights history to life and connected it to movement issues today. We loved his focus on organization and strategy to build movements. Our tour started a half our late and we weren’t notified until 9:55 am for a 10 am tour. Make sure to confirm a day ahead to make sure your tour starts at the expected time or you can make adjustments if times have changed.

Dennis

Awesome experience great teacher.

Very passionate. Great story telling style

-Lanif

Elizabeth

This is an excellent experience. Relevant, informative, and important. Our tour host was very personable and knowledgeable, and truly cared about our experience. Nashville is an important part of the Civil Rights Movement, and it was valuable to learn about the historical as well as the contemporary impact the movement made upon the Nashville we visit today. Our guide, Lauren, shared stories handed down to her from her grandmother which made the tour seem very personal. Lauren’s degree includes African American Studies as well as anthropology, so she is very knowledgeable about the subject. Thank you!

Deborah

Very interesting and informative .

Markus

I did the tour with my wife and we both loved it … great getting more insight into the civil rights movement and hearing about all those heroes and their brave actions. C.P. has great knowledge that she shared with us in an entertaining way. Highly recommend this tour !!!!

Ayinde

This is a pretty good tour that primarily covers Black history in Nashville during slavery. The host did a commendable job of explaining certain elements of our culture in a way that was forceful but also invited people to learn more than what is normally taughton the subject. There are one or two nitpicky items I’d add to help improve the overall tour but there very minor. I brought my 10 y/o along and he learned a lot and enjoyed himself. If you book this tour, prepare to walk (moderate amount) and have your ears, eyes, and minds open for some valuable learning!

It was a really fun tour and great experience to learn more about the history of Nashville!

-Hope

Laura

Excellent tour

Michelle

This tour was really wonderful! Full of insight and unique stories to nashville and it’s community.

Charles

Good tour. Learned a lot about Blues and Fisk’ impact here
